North East Olympic Games 2022

The Government of Meghalaya and the North East Olympic Association (NEOA) are slated to host the 2nd edition of the North East Olympic Games from the 10th of November till the 16th of November 2022 in Shillong, Meghalaya. The North East Olympic Games is an expression of solidarity by the north-eastern states of the country. Elite athletes congregate from the 8 north-eastern states to compete in various sporting disciplines. The aim of organizing the Games is to encourage greater participation of youth in sporting activities in order to discover talent for higher level & international competitions at an early stage.

The first edition of the North East Olympic Games was organised in Manipur in 2018, owing to the outbreak of the pandemic the subsequent editions could be not hosted. The second edition is a revival of the Games which is expected to feature around 3,000 athletes from the eight north eastern states of the country.

About the National games secretariat

The implementing body of the North East Olympic Games is the National Games Secretariat, it has been created under the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs for conduct of the National Games.

About the Stakeholders

The Department of Sports & Youth affairs and the Meghalaya Olympic Association manages all the essential work pertaining to sports. This time around, after a long gap of pandemic, Shillong is set to host the 2nd edition of the North East Olympic games as redemption for aspiring athletes.

After a high level meeting between the North East Organizing committee, Directorate of sports & Youth Affairs and the North East Olympic Association (NEOA), on the accord of Meghalaya State Olympic Association, it was decided that the sports were selected based on the availability of the infrastructure as stated by the sports and youth affairs minister, Banteibor Lyngdoh.

The North East Olympic Games mascot

‘NEO’ the official games mascot is inspired by the Clouded Leopard, the state animal of Meghalaya which is also a vulnerable animal. The attire worn by NEO is a fusion of the culture of the prominent tribes of Meghalaya.

Government of Meghalaya

The Government of Meghalaya have assigned different departments for the event with the objective of facilitating the development of sports and games, development of youth activities alongside the creation of necessary infrastructure required for channelising the potential of youths.

DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS & YOUTH AFFAIRS

The Department of Sports and Youth Affairs was started to facilitate the development of sports and games, development of youth activities in the state.

MEGHALAYA STATE OLYMPIC ASSOCIATION (MSOA)

The Meghalaya State Olympic Association was formed to extend it support to the Olympic movements in the state. It is affiliated to Indian Olympic Association.

NORTH EAST OLYMPIC ASSOCIATION (NEOA)

The North East Olympic association is a congregation of the olympic association of the North Eastern States. They aim towards developing sports towards promoting the olympic values at the olympic movement at the North Eastern region
